“The more one uses bamboo, the more shiny and beautiful it becomes. I want my works to be always close at hand, to be cherished by their owners.”
Besides his work as a graphic designer, Samura Kenichi creates things out of bamboo which he loves. He mainly uses a precious and rare form of bamboo called “soot bamboo,” which is bamboo from straw-thatched roofs that has been blackened through the ages by smoke.
Taking small, abandoned pieces of bamboo, he carves and polishes them,
breathing new life into them. They vary in colour. There is the colour of soot bamboo. The color of black lacquered bamboo. The natural colour of bamboo.
At the exhibit, about 200 pieces will be on display and for sale, including necklaces, rings, earrings, bangles, hair ornaments, obi ties, chopsticks and flower vases.
